Movie Review : If you never see a movie unless EVERYONE else LOVES it... then skip
"The Words". However, if you are able to enjoy a movie in spite of
silly reviewers questioning the ending, the plot twists, or perhaps and
don't require countless Dukes of Hazard-style car chase scenes and
seeing the nude bodies of the leading ladies... then go see "The Words"
and enjoy it! My wife a I went with another couple last night, and we
all generally liked it or loved it! We planned on dinner afterward and
this gave us time to discuss it... and that was helpful because we all
had taken away different interesting bits. The actors are good to
terrific. Jeremy Irons is exceptional! BUT...WHAT did it all mean? WHO
CARES!!! It meant, quite simply, they made a great movie that requires
one to have a mind to enjoy it. ;) Enjoy "The Words" for what it is...
something different, finally!

Movie Review : The film is obviously dark and upsetting, but it left me with so
many unanswered questions. Perhaps in our age of America's Next Top
Model, the directors expected a certain base understanding of the
modeling industry, but I could have used some more guidance. I would
have appreciated a narrator or on-screen captions saying things like
"This is a recruiter. It is the recruiter's job to…" or "Nadya is now
auditioning for…" Maybe I just have a way below average understanding
of modeling, but the whole time I kept asking myself very basic
questions that could have been easily explained, and would have made
for a much more educational film.
Additionally, the filmmakers failed to elaborate on certain themes that
were mentioned in passing, often by Ashley (who was an utter enigma as
a character, hovering between denial and insanity). Themes like
prostitution and sex trafficking, and illegal underage models. These
are issues that could use some unpacking. Ashley would say something
like, "We all know that some girls turn to prostitution (though she
never even says the word), but I don't have any first-hand evidence of
that," and then she would move onto another topic. I think in cases
like this, it is the filmmakers role to step in; if not to press Ashley
further in the interview than at least to provide the audience with a
statistic or something. However, the directors seemed determined to
keep the narrative confined to the claustrophobic world of the
characters that they were following, leaving the audience to scratch
their heads and speculate. Additionally, with no additional
information, the viewer is left with no idea about the scope of the
problem. Are situations like this the exception or the rule? Are they
limited to Japan, or to this one particular agency, or should we now
assume that any photograph we see in a fashion magazine has a crying
Russian child behind it? What can we do to prevent situations like
this? We simply are never given any of the answers.
Girl Model was an engaging and disturbing documentary, though it left
me wanting to know more. It showed us the characters and told us their
story, but left out a lot of the context necessary to create a holistic
understanding. I'll probably end up trying to do some more research
about the topic to answer some of the questions that I had, but it
would have been nice it the directors had done that work for me.

2. Download For Ellen (2012)
Movie Review : For Ellen feels like the combination of two short films, both roughly
thirty minutes in length, that were each injected with fifteen minutes
of filler. The first short film (or act), running more-or-less
forty-five minutes long, tells the story of Joby Taylor (Paul Dano),
the lead singer of a second-rate rock band, battling for a divorce suit
with his wife out of court. This leads to multiple mental breakdowns of
Joby, many lawyer meetings discussing settlements and entitlements, and
long shots focusing on Joby's often sulky, bitter face in close-up.
It's long and tedious. The second short film is predominately centered
on Joby and his six-year-old daughter Ellen (Shaylena Mandigo), who he
learns he'll lose entire custody of if he signs the current settlement
at hand. He takes her out for a few hours, awkwardly asking her about
her likes and dislikes, and simply trying to get to know her
personally, before he potentially cuts off any and all communication
with her. It's sensitive, extremely well-done material.
Paul Dano is a serious and convincing screen presence, considering his
age and how actors usually mature with time. Dano hit the ground
running with his first major performance as Dwayne in Little Miss
Sunshine, a teenager who decided to take a vow of silence until
becoming a pilot and then discovered devastating news. His roles have
treaded the line of bravery, assuming the role of either a conflicted
rocker, a trouble but optimistic teen, and even the bold voice of
reason. His Joby here is, in his own way, an anti-hero; we're not very
fond of him because of his "deadbeat dad" status, yet we can see his
act of reconnecting with his child as an audacious and daring one.
Since he is one of the only characters we meet and focus on during the
film, a lion's weight of its quality rests on his shoulders. His
performance is often a roller-coaster of emotions for the viewer,
however, what somewhat waters its quality is the writing, which is
ponderous, vague, and largely forced impressionism.
For Ellen falls into the category of an indie film that is smart for
not trying to do too much, yet kind of dumb for not doing enough. It
plays everything too safe. The long close-ups of Dano, many of them
unsteady, wobbly, and victim to a shaky camera, try to provide us with
sentimentality and intimacy during traditional scenes which a film like
this doesn't really need then. The scenes with Joby and Ellen are much
more structured and stable, in terms of camera angles, yet if there's
any time they should be unsteady and rather imperfect, it should be
then; not at the beginning of the film, when the story is brewing and
characters are being born.
The father-daughter dialog between our title character and her father
is simply remarkable. So remarkable I wish I could seriously recommend
watching the film from the forty-five minute mark till the end. If
there's one film that at least gets props for doing one thing
completely right and beautifully poetic, it's the naturalistic dialog
between Joby and Ellen. It's all about the incoherency and the small
details during these sequences. Take note of how many times Joby says
"um," or "like," or stutters when asking her a simple question. He
doesn't know what to say and what not say. Would you? Could you have a
solid conversation with your six-year-old daughter when you never see
her and barely know anything about her beyond her fast name? It'd be
horrifying and depressing for the both of you. Writer/director So Yong
Kim realizes this and completely amplifies what could've been a
contrived, tiresome addition to an already plot less film.
Now if only this one small detail or something like it could make the
first act work as powerfully well as the second one, we'd have a
stronger, more complete picture on our hands. If there's one other
thing that bothers me about For Ellen, though, it's the "make it up"
ending it attaches on there as a means to informally end the film with
the idea of you, the viewer, can decide how the story of the characters
will continue after these checkered events.
It's a pity I can't, technically, recommend the entire film. Say this
was actually two short films combined into one. The first one would get
two stars for being overlong, dry, and rather aimless. The second one
would get three and a half stars for being naturalistic, believable,
and entirely realistic. By combining them you get two and a half stars.
That's about right in my book.

Movie Review : If you've seen the Bourne Trilogy, and then you go and see this -
you're going to be severely disappointed. It's like a poor man's
version! This film tries to be everything that the Bourne series was -
but fails spectacularly. Every element of this film that comes together
to make the whole - is worthy of criticism. The storyline is
amateurish. When you get to the end of the film, you recollect what
you've just seen and think to yourself - man there were so many far
fetched scenes and wholly unnecessary ones - but then again, if plot
didn't contain them, there'd be no film! I'm sorry to be so vague, but
this film was put together like a recipe. The writer must have asked
himself - what do I need to put into an action/thriller to make it
worthy of that genre? Got all the elements together, and mashed them
together hastily to produce this utter waste of time. You're left
devoid of any satisfaction by the time you reach the end. Just don't
watch it and save yourself some money. Rent it on DVD, you'll thank me
later.

Movie Review : Leslye Headland's "Bachelorette" is an unfunny, miserable experience
that toddles around for 90 miserable minutes with three people so
obnoxious that you wouldn't want to share an elevator with them. It is
a comedy that strives to be an earthier recreation of "Bridesmaids" and
"The Hangover", but it is neither as clever, nor as funny as either of
those great films. This movie is aggressively bad.
What is worse is that the three leads are played by three otherwise
good actresses. Kirsten Dunst, just off her triumphant performance as a
bride facing the end of the world in "Melancholia" plays Regan, a girl
pushing 30 who has done everything right with her life and can't
understand why some rich, gorgeous hunky bozo hasn't swept her off her
feet. At her side are best pals Katie and Gena. Katie is a party girl
who spends most of her time coked-up or drunk. She's played by Isla
Fisher who has been wonderful in films like "The Wedding Crashers" and
"Confessions of a Shopaholic." Gena, played by Lizzy Caplan is just as
coked-up and spends her time pining for an old boyfriend who has
clearly moved on.
The story kicks off when the three friends are asked to be bridesmaids
to a girl they once ridiculed back in high school. She is Becky (Rebel
Wilson), a sensitive overweight girl that they once called "Pig Face."
Why she called these people to be part of her special day is a mystery
left unsolved. The night before the wedding, Becky's friends gather for
her bachelorette party at a hotel where, naturally, a stripper shows up
dressed as a cop. In the midst of his gyrating, he calls the
bride-to-be "Pig-face", and Becky is (naturally) so offended that she
brings the party to a halt.
In Becky's absence, the drunk Regan and Katie think it might be funny
to climb into the wedding dress at the same time so that they can post
the picture on Facebook. In the midst of their cruel joke, the dress
rips and the next hour of the movie is spent trying to find some
possible way to get it fixed. That means we get a long series of
misadventures as they run around Manhattan in a panic, yelling at
potential tailors when they aren't drinking, snorting or hooking up.
What is truly sad is that the trio seems more concerned with Becky's
wedding dress then they ever did with her feelings.
Between the the drugs, the sluttiness and their hateful demeanor,
Regan, Katie and Gena are the most obnoxious trio you'll ever meet.
They have no feelings. They fight all the time. They're cruel, hateful,
mean-spirited and self-pitying. They are all pushing 30 and are too
stoned and ignorant to figure why they're miserable. Then the movie has
the gall to ask for our sympathies. As the movie grinds toward its
third act (which is wall-to-wall with pre-wedding clichés), these three
nitwits get serious and we get to see them fall into a pattern of
pseudo-sensitive self-examination. At that point, we in the audience
just want them to go away.
On the sidelines is poor Becky, played in a brave performance by Rebel
Wilson, who exists around the edges of the film when she should be
center stage. She's a pretty girl with a nervous smile, a good heart,
and is (based on who she calls friends) apparently very forgiving. She
has a few fleeting moments when she shows some humanity but they are
cut short.
"Bachelorette" is based on a very dark 2010 play, and it can only be
hoped that the . There are scenes in this film that are just
nauseating. Did we really need a five-minute monologue of Gena's
theories about fellatio? Did we need the sight of Katie vomiting into a
bathtub? Did we need a best man toast that includes lewd descriptions
of what he did with one of the bridesmaids the night before? Was this
trip really necessary? * (our of four)

Movie Review : Jiri Barta's amazing new film is not just a masterpiece of animation:
It's a celebration of imagination and invention! Discarded items, from
antique toys to rotten potatoes, take on a life of their own when
discarded in the attic of a Czech home during the Cold War. Repurposed
and re-imagined into new tasks and roles, Barta's vision explodes with
enchanting creativity and visual splendor. This newly created,
English-Adaptation ads new dimension to the film with terrific
performances from a stellar voice cast, and an informative new opening
sequence which describes some back history of the principal characters.
TOYS IN THE ATTIC is truly an amazing film not to be missed while it's

Movie Review : Somewhere at the far edges of the absurd, the profound can be found.
This movie can be enjoyed strictly as a comedy, it can be taken
seriously by a few, but most should know this film reaches further than
it could ever truly grasp. Branded is flawed, fun, and perhaps best
enjoyed in an extremely tired, alternative state of mind.
A few reviews and reviewers note that this film does not live up to its
own advertising. There is irony there, but what does live up to
advertising? Advertising is amongst the biggest waist of resources in
contemporary society. Not just in terms of illusory currency, but the
waist of many of todays greatest artists, thinkers, and idea makers;
professionals payed to spin lies and manipulate participants of mass
media consumption.
Branded may only scratch the surface of many important current problems
caused by modern media, but at least its creators and performers put
themselves "out there" to ask some interesting questions. May more
artists ask important questions, and help move us all to a better
place.
